It seems as if children disappear into their bedrooms at age 12 and don't reappear again until they are 18. Help them create cozy and comfortable sanctuaries. Teens embrace a decorating philosophy that makes many adults cringe: Cover the walls with what's important to you. Posters, personal mementos, photos of family and friends, and nature themes are popular decorating accessories for teens. How a room feels is more important than how it looks. "When most parents decorate kids' rooms, they make them too neat and orderly," explains a 14-year-old girl. "It's just not cozy that way." Above all, they want a décor that is cheerful and comforting. "I want things that make you feel uplifted after a bad day at school," says a 12-year-old. "Your room should be a sanctuary." It's especially cool, say kids, if that sanctuary includes a comfy upholstered chair for just hanging out or a reading nook, such as the window seat in this room. Although some teens express color preferences, they admit that their tastes are fickle. Paint lets teens make design statements inexpensively. If your child's choice is a high-energy color such as purple, spread out the impact by using lighter and darker shades as in this room. Natural light, white woodwork, and a clean contemporary look also offset the strong hue

With basic white walls and run-of-the-mill fixtures, most newly-constructed homes could use a big dose of personality. What are the keys to imprinting your personal style to create instant character? We’ve enlisted three clever interiors experts to provide some design inspiration. 1. Details, Details. A few well-placed architectural details can turn a bland room into a grand room. Add dimension to a ceiling with coffers or beams. “This is a great way to define different sections of large spaces, such as a kitchen, dining, or great room,” says Richmond, Virginia-based interior designer Marcie Blough. 2. Windows of Opportunity. Framing a window with the right treatment makes a marked improvement in the finish level of a new room. “It’s easy to add drama, color, and detail with drapery hardware and great fabrics,” says interior designer Kathryn Chaplow, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mount treatments several inches above the window casings for added height.3. Color Your World. Painting is the fastest way to enhance the look of a room, and a little color in an unexpected place can make a big impact. “I love interior doors painted a contrasting color,” says Chaplow. “Black doors in a house with all white trim are so chic, and touches like that provide an instant sense of customization and history.”4. Don’t Tip the Scale. Many new homes have high-volume ceilings, so it’s important to maintain balance in the space below. “Nothing makes a big room look disproportionately large like tiny furnishings and accessories,” says Chaplow. For large walls with little detail or trim work, try a grouping of nicely framed art or a grand, framed mirror. “Remember to keep accessories focused, and in proportion to the size of the area,” the designer notes. “A lot of small things can become clutter rather than points of interest.”5. Light Up Your Life. The right (or wrong) lighting can instantly change the mood of a space. “Ideally, a room should have three types of lighting,” says Blough. “Ambient (overhead), task (focused on an area for a specific activity), and accent lighting (such as a sconce) add interest.” Pendants over a kitchen island, sconces in a bathroom, a striking foyer fixture, or small LEDs in built-in bookshelves, can add instant light and life. Or try directional lighting in a hallway for a cool, gallery effect.6.Mix it up. A blend of eclectic furnishings and accessories can give a new home a cozy, lived-in look. When designing the interiors for a custom home, Skye Kirby of Lillian August in Norwalk, Connecticut, spiced up the palette of creams, grays, and golds with pops of black and small touches of animal print. “A little bit of zebra goes a long way,” Kirby says. She also maintained a proper balance of new and old-looking pieces by introducing a rustic cabinet with vintage glass doors to the tailored family room

If you have decided to buy a new house, be sure to work closely with your architect or builder not only in devising blueprints but also as the structure takes shape. If adjustments or substitutions are in the plans, make sure you have final approval. Small changes, such as an extra counter where the kids can hunker down for a snack or no shelf in the bath, will impact how each room functions. Use these decorating tips for new homes as you begin to make your plans. When buying a newly constructed home in a subdivision or development, sign on the dotted line as soon as possible. Purchasing a new home before standard flooring, cabinets, fixtures, and appliances are installed expands your decorating options and eliminates the expense of replacing those materials -- the ones you would never have chosen -- later.Keep in mind that tract-type builders translate fewer decisions, while semicustom builders generally offer a variety of packages featuring different upgrades along with floor plan options. If you intend to enlist an interior designer for your new home, involve him or her as soon as possible to help determine color schemes and select appropriate finishes. Your designer should have a copy of the blueprints or just the room, window, and doorway dimensions to choreograph furnishings. Dimensions are also invaluable when it comes to older homes. Ask the seller if they'll allow you to take measurements. You may not be able to fit your queen-size bed through a narrow passageway in a rambling old farmhouse or a cottage. You don't want to learn that on moving day! Although it's not always feasible, staggering closing times will allow you to work on your new home before you have to vacate the other home. Jobs like painting and repairing are easier when rooms are devoid of furniture and boxes. Even a few days will give you the opportunity to paint the bath and scrub the carpets.Integrating new decorating ideas from room to room can sometimes present a challenge. On the next page, find out how to prevent your new interior decorating from clashing with older interior decorating

Location, location, location. In the garden, the patio is the place where everybody congregates. Usually my clients want to know where to locate their patio and what size it should be. The best place is where you have a natural tendency to sit; a comfortable area with ample room. If you prefer sitting in the sun, I would look at the sun pattern (during a day when you are at home) and figure out where the sunniest area of your garden is situated. The sun is the most intense between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m

I like to cook, especially when I don't have to. When I have the time, I like to whip up the real thing, like a pie with a homemade crust. My cooking style generally can be classified as "get outta my way." I need space for all the stuff I'm chopping and shredding. There are a lot of dirty dishes and a lot of tools. The Country Victorian style hearkens back to the decor of the Victorians' cottages and vacation homes out of the city. The style is characterized by an interesting variety of pastel colors such as mauve, pinks, pale greens, peaches and blues in floral or fruit patterned fabrics. Materials such as wood, brass and iron are key elements in a Country Victorian room. Use a dark oak chest, an old chest with hand grained wood finishes, or plain wall bookcases to display family heirlooms. Painted wicker, cottage flowers and herbs, lightly covered windows draped with gauzy fabrics and laces add to the Country Victorian look. Place handmade rugs on the floors, and drape blankets or embroidered rugs over armchairs. Accessorize with dried flower arrangements.

The Traditional Victorian style is characterized by rich brocades and velvets, both in furniture, walls and window dressings. Mauves, burgundies, rich blues and greens, along with lace and fringe compliment Victorian furnishings. Stained glass, pottery tiles, and parquet and marble flooring were also key features of Victorian style. Porcelain dolls, wicker, old high button shoes, hats and hat boxes, buttons and dried flowers are wonderful accent pieces to a Victorian room. The Victorian era was the era of abundance and one in which industrial advancement made mass production possible for the first time in history. This trend to the mass circulation of affordable things, allowing middle class families to afford the elements of the prevalent interior decorating style. The primary design principle in traditional Victorian style is to display many decorative items. For some, the effect may appear crowded or even cluttered, but a pleasing grouping of similar items (whether china teacups, picture frames or decorative pill boxes) is a must-have for a Victorian room. Consider the following suggestions to achieve the Traditional Victorian look. Metal hardware is a must. Victorians always admired items from the Renaissance and reproduced all types of hardware. Use antiqued doorknobs, drawer pulls, etc. to add a few simple Victorian touches to any room. Most every Victorian room — whether an upstairs bedroom or formal parlor — was equipped with a fireplace. Fireplaces were plain and polished with carved brackets. Use simple motifs to decorate the corners of your mantel. White marble fireplaces are ideal, but with simple paint techniques, even wooden fireplaces can give an illusion of marble. Decorative moldings and ornamental plasterwork were popular in Victorian homes. As moldings can be expensive, the similar effect can be achieved with the use of decorative wooden cornices placed at the end of arches. Stained glass is an integral part of the Victorian style. To avoid the high cost of having custom-made stained glass windows or doors, stain them yourself with permanent stain glass colors. If you want more flexibility, make designs on a separate piece of glass and just attach the finished piece to your window or door. The preferred color scheme of a Victorian house is dark. Rich colors should be used for all your most frequented rooms. To make sure you have adequate illumination, keep only one or two walls in dark colors and paint rest of the room in lighter shades. All woodwork, like the walls, were traditionally grained in dark colors. This effect is very easy to achieve yourself: Just paint woodwork with dark polish or stain in darker shades. Since machine-made wallpapers became popular during the Victorian era, they were used in abundance. Fruit, floral-designed wallpapers and tapestry papers can be used to achieve this effect. Or consider stenciling a Victorian design on your walls. Victorian furniture should be heavily upholstered. Seasonal variations can be achieved by slipcovering furniture. Use fabric everywhere, for upholstery, curtains, valances and other window treatments. You can also use fabric as a wall covering in the place of wallpaper, by using starch to paste the fabric to the wall.

Christopher Dresser said, "Good design should have interest at many levels!" For example, a plain painted wall looks the same from two feet away as it does from ten. A subtly designed wallpaper or a faux finish keeps the space much more interesting. It is my goal to achieve a beautiful "blended" space. Upon entering a room you should first enjoy the overall appearance of the space. To maintain interest and create a rich effect, every room must have abundant detail. Additionally, the room should be practical, with good traffic flow. Sitting rooms should be made up of intimate conversation areas. The room as a whole should have balance.

Color selection is almost always the starting point for every decorating style. Your colors will make the most immediate impression. Victorian decorating makes use of many pallets. Color choice is probably more outspoken than in any other style concept. Avoid falling into trap of finding a color to go with what you’ve got. Just because the possibilities are many, don’t think carefull consideration to individual color choices you will use at the outset has little impact upon the accomplishment of success in the over-all project. You will want to chose your colors with a clear idea of some of the other elements you plan to draw into the project. Deep, rich color distinguishes the importance of a room. The foyer, parlor and dinning room being most important because they are most seen by visitors and guests. Just which deep colors to use depend upon other additions. Lots of dark mahogany trim and furnishings show best with deep greens. Blue works well with silver and pewter adornments. Lightening up on the tones might be needed where natural light is low or where intricate oriental rugs and tapestries are planned for hallways.

Two historical factors came together to influence the interior decorating style of Victorian England. One was the enormous global reach of the British Empire. By the late 19th century, England had colonized India, Australia, New Zealand and much of Africa. These exotic influences fueled an interest in oriental rugs, sensuous fabrics, brass accessories and even tropical houseplants. Closer to home, the Industrial Revolution brought mass-produced versions of expensive goods within reach of middle-class households. Chemical dyes replaced rare natural pigments for fabrics and paint, making bright, rich colors commonplace in Victorian decorating. More than a century later, the opulent elegance of Victorian decorating is still popular.

Designing a home and decorating it the way you want is a lot more than merely putting a few objects together that serve the purpose. It is often a wise thing to have a running theme across your home as it will give the right idea on how to accessorize and make shopping a lot easier. If themes are what you are going how about the instant classic – the Victorian style of decorating interiors. It brings a touch of royalty, a sense of class and adds timeless charm. Going Victorian though is a lot harder than picking contemporary styles and design as you are trying to recreate the past. But here are a few simple tips that will you with that task.

New Modern Famous Design Victorian Home DecoratingLuxury Design Victorian Style Home Decorating Ideas

The Victorians were people who were known to pay too much importance to sophistication and elegance. The Victorian Era was a time when England was ruled by Queen Victoria. They were fashion conscious not only in their appearance, but also in the way they decorated their homes. A Victorian home was a reflection of the status and social class of the owner. They liked their houses to be decorated in a very rich manner, mirroring the style of the earlier aristocratic community. Typically, a Victorian house would be adorned with exquisite furniture and accessories, making the whole house look palatial. Even in this era of modernization, there are many people who prefer to design their houses in the Victorian style. To start with the interiors, the most important thing to decide is the colors for the walls. Victorian walls were never painted in the modern light shades, instead they were usually coated with dark and vibrant colors like sapphire, ruby, emerald green, etc. You can also use different colors on different walls to add to the style. If you want to have light colors, include them in the kitchen and hallway. Avoid light shades in the main rooms. Another thing that was fashionable in the Victorian period was wallpaper. You can go in for wallpapers with different patterns like flowers, butterflies, birds, leaves, etc. If you have a big and spacious house, you can go for bigger patterns. However, opt for the small patterns if you are in an apartment or smaller house, as bigger patterns in small houses would make the house look less spacious. You can also use different patterns on the border, something that was also very common during that period. The flooring of a Victorian home was usually made of wood and was covered with rich looking carpets having flowery designs to match the look of the walls. For kitchen flooring you can use marble, tiles, bricks or even hard wood. You can either leave it bare or put washable rugs on top of the flooring. To get the authentic Victorian look, it is important that you buy furniture that were similar to that period. The furniture of those times were usually made of teak, oak, mahogany, rosewood, walnut, etc. Beautifully carved tables, chairs, beds, etc., can definitely accentuate the whole Victorian look. You can also go for wicker furniture that would give that perfect rustic look to your home. Accessories are very important while decorating a home, as they complete the look of the house. Curtains and fabrics for sofas and chairs should be bought while keeping in mind the colors and patterns of the walls of the room. While selecting curtains, one can go for heavily embroidered fabric, velvet or even brocade to add to the richness of the room. While choosing table clothes, bed sheets, pillow covers, etc., use linen made of laces, embroidery and ribbons. It was common to see antique porcelain dolls and figurines, lace doilies, decorative china and plates in a typical Victorian household. One can also make use of decorative lighting like small table lamps, magnificent chandeliers or candelabras to give that finishing effect of a Victorian home. Decorating your home in the Victorian style can be very expensive. However, you can get hold of a lot of authentic Victorian stuff at thrift stores and even in flea markets at cheap rates. Usually, a typical Victorian house is crammed with furniture. However, in today's times it would be difficult to manage such a house. It would be better if you take some interior decorating ideas from the Victorian period and design your house as per your own requirements and tastes.

It always help if you know before hand what style you would like for your house. It could be contemporary/modern, country style, French country style or the classic Victorian types. This will help to search for furnitures and drapes according to the style. In modern types, minimalist is the key word. In country style, there would be more elements of cowboy hats, wooden tables etc. French windows and frilly pillow covers and Victorian grandeur tables, cupboards, mantle piece and long dining tables would be more suitable for French country and Victorian style.

The beach decorating style is both casual and charming. It brings a bit of nature and fun into any home and the best part is that you can give your home a great beach theme without having to spend a lot of money. When considering a new decorating theme for any room, there are 3 things you want to think about - the colors, the furniture and the accessories. Here are some tips on how to pull together a beach theme in your home using these 3 elements. Color Any good beach decorating theme should tie in the colors of the beach. Sky and ocean blues, sandy tans and sunshine yellows look great. However, a white color scheme accented with blue and yellow pillows and accessories can look wonderful too. One fun idea is to paint the ceiling a yellow, the walls a light blue and use tan colored rugs - sisal rugs are great for this theme.

If you are on a budget, then paint is the perfect solution. It is cheap plus it makes a huge impact on any room. In fact, paint is one of the least expensive decorating options but makes the biggest difference. Furniture You want the furniture for your beach theme to be casual. Soft fluffy couches with slip covers are ideal and don't forget to include lots of pillows. You might also consider wicker but make sure it is sturdy enough for household furniture. If you are decorating a kitchen, whitewashed wooden kitchen tables and chairs go great with this theme.
